How to Winter proof your skin?
Winter is upon us suddenly and although you may not have changed anything regarding your skincare routine your skin is changing.
This can be difficult to understand if you haven’t changed your skincare regime or if you are not trying to acclimatise to new products. The only change has been the weather.
What does winter do to the skin?
There are a few reasons why our skin changes in winter. We rapidly go from our warm houses, offices or schools to the very cold outdoors. The wind is cold and harsh on our skin, stripping away our natural skin barrier that aids in keeping the moisture in our skin. This can cause redness, sensitivity, inflammation, itchy skin and rosacea flare ups. It can also flare up acne as the skin will over produce oil to counter act the drying effects of its surroundings.
This time of year brings its own stresses with festive season upon us and we usually put more pressure on ourselves to do more. Stress increases our cortisol levels which tells our bodies to protect our vital organs, it does this by rushing the blood to the vital organs leaving the rest of the body getting by with very little. For me and many of us that means cold hands and feet!
Our sleeping and eating routine may have changed. We might drink more alcohol and unfortunately alcohol has the lovely side effect (not only of a hangover) of dehydrating our skin which can also lead to drinkles (lines and wrinkles caused by drinking alcohol).
First step
The first step in looking after our skin is to cleanse it correctly and remove all traces of makeup, oil, bacteria and pollution that can be left sitting on our skin.
Using a cleanser that is suitable for your skin and a daily exfoliating scrub will help improve the skins tone and texture.
As always applying a broad spectrum SPF is essential for skin health. All forms of light is damaging on the skin so SPF is essential 365 days a year. It also gives a little protection from the harsh elements.
Winter skin issues
Dry/ Dehydrated/ Eczema/ Drinkles
Your skin feels dry, tight and could be red, itchy and even have a scaly rash if you suffer from eczema. This is very uncomfortable. The solution is to soothe the skin and flood it with hydration and moisture.
Our first go to for dry skin is Omegas. Omegas are fatty acids that we get from our food or by supplementation. Omegas are essential to maintain the cell wall. Once the cell wall is intact it can hold moisture which leads to enhanced protective skin barrier and skin immunity. Advanced Nutrition Skin Omegas+ also contain a low level of Vitamin A to help in repairing and maintaining skin health.
To treat the skin from the top try Super B serum. This super serum is a drink for the skin and can be applied under the eyes. It contains a high level of Niacinamide (B3) which hydrates and boosts your collagen production, plumping out the skin. Crosslinked Hyaluronic Acid that is 50 times the moisture retaining properties of traditional hyaluronic acid and helps to prevent transepidermal water loss which is the evaporation of water from the skin.
To add additional comfort we would recommend the Ultimate Hydration Moisturiser which delivers immediate relief to dry skin. This super-rich, nourishing cream provides maximum hydration, while also improving the skin’s elasticity, tone and texture.
If you are looking for a more anti-aging product to really tackle those lines. Super A+ serum contains pure Retinol combined with anti-ageing Biomimetic tripeptide to increase cell renewal and provide advanced skin rejuvenation. It’s a high potency retinol which contains proven anti-ageing ingredients to encourage increased production of collagen and elastin to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
*This product should be used with caution so we would suggest that you contact us so we can walk you through the process on how to use it correctly and to provide you with ongoing support.
Red skin/ Rosacea flare ups
Maybe you already suffer from red skin or it has flared up with the change of season but it’s sore, red, inflamed, itchy and uncomfortable.
Vitamin C brings down redness, inflammation and evens out your skin tone. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that works like a battery for fibroblasts which is directly responsible for your collagen and elastin. It lightens and brightens dull looking skin, supports blood vessels and is anti-inflammatory.
Skin Vit C is a supplement that contains a high dose of Vitamin C, Acerola Berry Complex and Zinc. Acerola Berry inhibits melanin product (pigmentation) and aids in the delivery of Vitamin C passing from the dermis to the epidermis.
Super C Serum combines high concentrations of Vitamin C with powerful antioxidants to protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. It rebuilds elasticity and protects from oxidative stress. Its anti-inflammatory properties assist in reducing facial redness and encourage skin healing and brightening.
Acne
Your acne has flared up and coming from a sufferer of hormonal acne I know exactly how frustrating this can be. Festive season is here and if you are lucky enough to be out and about you want to look your best not be self-conscious about your skin.
Due to the changes in temperature our skin believes it needs to produce more oil which can lead to acne break outs.
Keeping up your daily skincare routine for acne prone skin using Daily Facial Cleanser and Daily Facial scrub to completely and effectively clean the skin and remove dead skin cells is always the best start.
It’s important to remove all excess oils, bacteria, pollution and makeup from your skin, don’t over scrub the skin either or you could end up causing sensitivity. The Daily Facial Scrub is gentle enough to use daily but we prefer to use it 2 to 3 times per week.
Clear Complexion Gel is a spot treatment. It contains alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids combined tea tree, licorice bilberry and Calendula to treat and prevent acne. A little goes a long way. It is applied straight after you cleanse your skin and can be used AM and PM.
Skin Accumax is scientifically advanced nutritional supplement which works from within for clear, flawless skin naturally. It reduces sebum production, redness, anti-inflammatory, helps break down fats and encourages the liver to process correctly and detoxify. It’s an excellent supplement for anyone suffering with problematic skin, including maskne. It doesn’t dry out the skin like other acne products.
Our skin is living tissue and it is constantly changing, although anti-ageing or treating a skin condition like acne might be your initial concern, skin health is the goal.
Our aim is to make sure that your skin cells have all the right ingredients to correctly reproduce from the inside and have the right ingredients on the outside to keep your skin barrier unblemished and working at its optimum level providing you with immunity.
